There are several reasons why teenagers have more accidents than other age groups. One reason is that they are immature, inexperienced drivers. They often either under estimate dangerous situations or fail to recognize hazardous situations until it is too late. Many teenagers follow too closely and fail to maintain a safe distance behind other vehicles. Others drink and drive or are distracted by other situations.

Teenagers need structured driver education programs which teach them not only the driving rules, regulations and the mechanics of how to drive a car but how to avoid accidents as well. The instruction can take place in a classroom, in a vehicle, online or any combination thereof. Driving instruction should include teaching them about hazardous traffic, road and weather conditions and the consequences of failing to do so.

Trucker Buddy International has developed a new program called Trucking Mentors. This is a program taught to high school students by commercial truck drivers which teaches them how to drive safely around heavy trucks. Truck accidents are the most devastating accidents that occur on our roads. Vehicles with a gross weight of 10,000 lbs. or more are considered to be heavy trucks. Tractor/trailers can weigh over 80,000 lbs. when loaded. This is 20 to 30 times more weight than a typical automobile. Accidents involving a heavy truck or tractor/trailer are likely to result in death or serious injury.

Trucker Buddy is to be applauded for establishing the Trucking Mentors program. Trucking Mentors are CDL drivers which teach teenagers about all aspects of driving safely around trucks. This includes teaching them about blind spots and how to safely pass trucks, etc. Students have the chance to talk to and ask these truck drivers questions. This training gives student the knowledge they need to safely drive near heavy trucks. The goal of Trucker Buddy and the Trucking Mentors Program is to reduce the number of accidents involving teenagers and heavy trucks.
